Chautauqua: Boulder, Colorado

Property
Chautauqua is a hidden gem at the base of Boulder’s Flat Iron Mountains, just minutes from downtown Denver. Stay in one of their National Historic Landmark cottages, hike on the 48 miles of trails, or do nothing at all. Chautauqua’s charm will leave an indelible imprint on you as it did my family.
Location
Boulder is one of Colorado’s most renowned outdoor Meccas. Hiking trails abound, the Boulder Farmer’s Market is bustling with activity in the summer, and don’t forget Pearl Street, Boulder’s popular pedestrian mall. Street performers and fun, quirky shops are everywhere.
Sleeps
The 100-year-old cottages have been completely refurbished. They’re not much to look at on the outside, but darling and quaint on the inside. They have studio, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom cottages as well as lodges for larger groups—perfect for family reunions. My family of four slept in a 2-bedroom cottage and it was the perfect size. Don’t expect all the bells and whistles–there were not any TVs or stereos. We were so busy we didn’t even notice or care.
Highlights
Where do I start? First, the Enchanted-Mesa Trail is our must-do hike with fabulous views of Boulder and Colorado University. Another highlight is eating at the Dining Hall, voted Colorado’s best outdoor dining facility. My kids love the food and their menu identifying all the area’s wildlife. The playground and huge park are perfect for letting your little ones roam…and play. Behind our cottage, there were basketball and tennis courts. There are several great cultural events and educational events for children as well.
Good to know
Even the locals do not know about staying in the cottages but on the weekends, expect a lot of people on the hiking trails and at the playground.
