The McCloud River Mercantile Hotel, right on Main Street in downtown McCloud and less than a block from the Shasta Sunset Dinner Train (which has great family trips, including open-air pumpkin rides in October) has 11 newly renovated rooms with comfortable beds, heated floors in the bathrooms, and charming decor–especially if you like wallpaper with vintage cars and old train tickets on it, high ceilings, and enormous bathrooms.
Never heard of McCloud? It’s a quaint and historic former company mill town nestled in a vast forest of sugar pine and douglas fir just four hours north of San Francisco. McCloud draws thousands of visitors every year who are looking for outdoor recreation, from swimming to flyfishing, and it’s also the closest town to the Mt Shasta ski resort.
Amazing hiking trails and gorgeous waterfalls in the summer, spring, and fall, and awesome skiing, snowboarding, and igloo-making in the winter.
Good to know
The rooms at the inn are on top of the Mercantile, a sprawling building first constructed in the late 19th-century and added on to afterwards. Of the several shops downstairs is the Sugar Pine Candy Company. And yep, your kids will be frequent visitors there. “Mommy, just one more bright yellow happy face chewing gum ball!” Besides, who can resist jars full of huckleberry bears and chocolate rocks?
