Posada Andrea Cristina: Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

Property
Small bird and family friendly budget B&B consisting of 6 simple cabinas. Two of the cabinas are free standing and a cool new tree house cabina is under construction.  Cabinas are out of sight from the road and set in a nice garden planted to attract birds and butterflies and the resident sloth.  Each cabina has a private bathroom, ceiling or floor fans, screens on the windows and a little patio with a hammock or a couple of chairs.  The owners are friendly and set out a fabulous free hot breakfast with lots of tropical fruit and home baked bread, and can make reservations for area attractions.

Location
Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui (sometimes called just Sarapiqui) is a small town in the lowland tropical rainforest.  The B&B is at the edge of town and is about a 15-minute walk to the town center that has a couple of restaurants, a big grocery store, pharmacy and other small shops.  2 hours from La Fortuna (home of Arenal Volcano) and 1 1/2 hours from the San Jose airport.

Sleeps
2-5.  The two cabinas that sleep 5 have one room with a double and single and a tiny side room with a set of bunk beds.

Highlights
Birding on the small property is great.  The owner loves kids and set up the spotting scope so mine could easily see the sloth high up in the tree.  Our kids also enjoyed the small kids wading pool.  Lots of wildlife and rainforest viewing activities in the area including Tirimbina Wildlife Refuge, wildlife boat ride on the Rio Sarapiqui, whitewater rafting, La Selva Biological Reserach Station, chocolate tour, and bat night tour.

Good to know
Great value for nice basic cabinas.  No TV or telephone, but there is an internet cafe in town.  The owner Alex Martinez and his son Kevin also work as guides and are excellent birders.  The family will cook lunch and dinner if you have a large group and make prior arrangements.  The food is some of the best in the country- seriously!  Showers have hot water in theory but are tricky- ask the family for a demo before you disrobe.
