The Roxbury Motel: Roxbury, New York

Property
This grooviest of boutique properties in the Catskills lets parents share the best of their childhood (without the scratchy plaid pants or gravity-defying hair). Kids doing that wake-every-two-hours-all-night thing? Maybe a stay in Jeannie’s “Genie’s Bottle” will give them suite dreams. “Ruh Roh!” Travelling with friends or the grands? No worries, connecting two-room “George’s Spacepad” takes off a cartoon classic to solve space and beyond needs. If not done well, this theme would be beyond cheesy, but the owners’ incredible attention to detail (not to mention a background designing sets for the Met Opera) pull off this 60′s/70s trip into imagination with style and class.

Location
If your affinity for history predates Bam Bam and Pebbles, you’ll appreciate the National Historic Registry claiming the entire town of Roxbury as their own. Steam train trips and stroller-friendly trails allow easy access to enjoy the beauty of the Catskill Mountains.

Sleeps
Unlimited combinations, check out comprehensive room/suite shots on the website. Many mini-suites offer the convenience of kitchens for middle of the night bottle warming.

Highlights
Tiny hands can get the feel of felting or claywork at the Roxbury Arts Group’s frequent kid-friendly workshops. Check out walking tours of town (led by costumed historical figures) or hit a Roxbury Nine Vintage baseball game to see how the game was played in 1898. Stock up on local flavor at the popular Round Barn/Pakatan Farmer’s Market.

Good to know
These guys put out an across-the-board incredible breakfast, but the coffee cake is to die for. Ask the owners for directions to the local bakery and pick up a few for the freezer. Kids will be mesmerized by the crazy visuals at adjacent Public Lounge. Great South American nibbles and funky yerba mate are served up each evening. Massive complimentary DVD collection can help kids catch on to the nostalgic goodness around them (or, sigh, their fave Disney flicks).
