New Family Friendly Hotels in Kauai:

Outrigger Waipouli Beach Resort and Spa: Kapaa, Kauai

waipouli1waipouli2waipouli3waipouli4
Property

This new beachfront resort in Kauai has one and two bedroom condos, a spa, and complimentary parking. You will have a hard time dragging your kids away from the two-acre fantasy pool, with waterslides, sand bottom toddler area, and a waterfall cave. So just pull up your lounge chair, and order some shaved ice to make the wait easier.

Location
Located on the eastern, Coconut coast of Kauai, in the town of Kapaa. It’s eight miles north of Lihue airport. Conveniently located near shopping centers, with a Safeway, Starbucks, and Snorkel Bob’s only a block away. The resort is on the beach, but it’s not safe for swimming.

Sleeps
Up to 6.

Highlights
My idea of luxury vacation has changed since I became a mom. This condo fit my definition nicely: fully equipped kitchen with a new sub-zero refrigerator, stacked dishwasher, marble counter tops, and a convection oven. While my frozen pizza cooked in the fancy oven, I danced over to the in-room washer and dryer with my pile of soggy swimsuits and beach towels. The restaurant was good for those nights that even the fancy kitchen couldn’t entice us to cook. Try the coconut shrimp to go with your Mai Tai.

Good to know
Most of the condos are privately owned, so you could also try renting directly through an owner; check vacation rental websites. This popular resort fills up quickly, so make reservations early to secure a condo and get the best rates. Booking through Outrigger will give you the advantage of a generous cancellation policy.

Sheraton Kauai Resort: Poipu, Hawaii

Property
This spacious beachfront property was designed with families in mind. A beachfront pool with a lagoon like atmosphere and water slide and a kid’s club with fishing and coconut painting offers plenty for the kids to do. And fluffy beach beds and hammocks are perfect for those that want to relax.

Location
Poipu Beach is on the sunny south side of the island with calmer waves and a huge spread of white sand. Waimea Canyon, an overlook of the NaPali Coast and Fern River Grotto are all a short drive away.

Sleeps
Sheraton Kauai Resort features connecting suites for families sleeping up to six.

Highlights
The kids enjoyed building sand castles and going down the water slide as well as fishing in the stocked pond. The beach was amazing and the water temperature just right! The sunset luau is fun for the whole family, and a good way to try out some local foods. There is a laundry room that made traveling with the family easy.

Good to know
If you are traveling with the family make sure to request connecting rooms. We stayed here while filming Travel With Kids Hawaii: The Island of Kauai (more information on TravelWithKids.tv) and the connecting rooms gave us plenty of space…and the ocean views…wow!

Kiahuna Plantation: Poipu, Kauai

kiahuna34.jpg kiahuna1.jpg kiahuna21.jpg
Property

A gorgeous low-rise beachfront condominium complex with a mellow old Hawaiian feel. The studio, one, and two-bedroom condos are laid out over acres and acres of rolling lawns on one of the world’s most perfect golden sand beaches. Most families plan to go out to dinner, but can’t tear themselves away from nightly sunset barbecue scene on the large central lawn. A very, very family-friendly property with tons of return guests.

Location
The Kiahuna Plantation is located in laid back but luxurious Poipu, on the sunny southern side of Kauai (good in any season, but especially in the winter when north shore beaches are too wild for swimming). The nearest town is charming Koloa (five minutes by car). Waimea and Lihue are easily reached in half an hour. Kauai is one of the quieter islands in Hawaii, and has cornered the market on cinematically spectacular scenery. Nightlife is pretty much nonexistent.

Sleeps
2-6.

Highlights
Tiptoeing around endangered monk seals on the beach. Poolside piña coladas. Bird, whale, and gecko watching. Snorkling right outside your door. Puka dogs across the street for lunch. For those who love kitsch, the Sheraton Luau (right next door) provides it in spades.

Good to know
The Kiahuna Plantation has no pool of its own. If you tire of salt water (or want to order lunch poolside), you’ll have free use of the Poipu Swim and Tennis Club across the street. The pool has a small waterslide that is seriously perfect for the short set, and-best of all-visible from the jacuzzi.
