New Family Friendly Hotels in Orange County:

Doubletree Guest Suites Anaheim Resort: Anaheim, California

Property
If you are looking for suite style accommodations close to the Disneyland Resort this is your place. From the warm chocolate chip cookies at check in to the courteous and helpful staff, Doubletree Anaheim goes out of their way to make you feel at home.

Location
Located one mile from Disneyland on Harbor Blvd.

Sleeps
2-6.

Highlights
Suite style rooms with contemporary décor and comfy beds. Mini fridges, microwaves, high speed internet, coin and valet laundry, and even a video arcade.  There is a swimming pool on site which is perfect for cooling off while taking an afternoon break from Disneyland. If you feel the overwhelming need to exercise while on vacation, check out their fitness center.

Good to Know
The hotel is on the Disneyland trolley route so there is no need to pay an arm and a leg to park at Disneyland.  Cribs are available for the little ones.  Kids eat free at the on-site dining.

Residence Inn Anaheim Maingate: Anaheim, California

Property
The Residence Inn Anaheim Maingate is a convenient, no-frills place for families on their trip to Disneyland. There are not many hidden charges at this hotel since almost everything is complimentary: the buffet-style breakfast, parking, wireless, and their grocery buying service. There is not much of a pool scene, but most kids seemed to enjoy the pool anyway.

Location
The property is about ½ mile from Disneyland. For the brave few, it is within walking distance to the park. For those families with throbbing feet, the ART shuttle stops at the property and gets you to the park in about 5 minutes.

Sleeps
2-8. There are bi-level kid suites, with 2 bathrooms, available.

Highlights
Want to take a break from unhealthy, overpriced Mickey-shaped food? Whip up some sandwiches and snacks in the fully equipped kitchen to take into the park.

Good to know
This is a popular hotel and fills up quickly, so reserve your rooms at least a month in advance. Taking the ART shuttle is convenient, but not if you want to be at the park by 8.a.m.

Howard Johnson Plaza Anaheim: Anaheim, California

Property
Looks like a 60’s throwback but this HoJo’s is not the kind I remember as a kid. The Anaheim property was modern, clean and up-to-date. Most rooms have double or queen-sized beds, microwaves, mini-fridges and balconies. Kids’ suites are apparently being added soon.

Location
Walking distance to Disneyland’s main gate. The front desk said it was a seven-minute walk but it took us less than that. We parked at the hotel before check-in and after check-out with no additional charge. There were restaurants of all kinds located between the hotel and Disneyland.

Sleeps
Fairly spacious rooms, many with new pillowtop beds – comfy! Enough room to park a double stroller.

Highlights
The newly installed, pirate-themed water play area was as much fun as a theme park. It included water slides, splash zones, a giant bucket dump and a kid’s pool with a beach-slope entrance. It’s open late for kids of all ages. A more relaxing swim can be had at another full-sized pool on the hotel grounds.

Good to know
Free internet connection, seven acres of nicely landscaped grounds. Many rooms face Disneyland so you can wake up with a view of the Matterhorn. Try to secure a room that does not face the Interstate. Unfortunately, there’s no breakfast included.

Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel: Anaheim, California

Property
The most budget-friendly of Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort properties, this hotel offers a standard hotel experience mixed with a modicum of mouse magic. Fifteen floors of clean rooms, tastefully decorated in beachy décor, with not-so-hidden Mickeys on lamp bases, toiletry bottles, etc. Use of mini-fridges and portable play yards is complimentary, and sooooo helpful!

Location
It’s a ten-minute walk to Disneyland’s main gate via a shortcut through the lobby of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Even closer is the special resort-guest-only entrance to Disney’s California Adventure® Park.

Sleeps
Standard rooms hold a king-sized bed or two queen-sized beds. Suites are larger and offer access to a concierge hospitality suite. Adjoining rooms available so Grandma can join the fun.

Highlights
Great views of CA Adventure Park and the nightly fireworks show (complete with piped-in music on the poolside patio). The pool isn’t as tricked out as at other Disney properties, but there is a water slide. Disney cartoons are shown 24/7 in the small “Paradise Theater.” Gift shop offers a substantial stocking-stuffer selection.

Good to know
If your little darling hasn’t had enough princess face time, there’s a closed-circuit TV channel airing Princess Bedtime Stories. Light fare (muffins, yogurt, fruit and coffee) is available in the lobby café. The full-service PCH Grill offers a “Lilo and Stitch” character breakfast buffet, but reservations are a good idea to avoid a wait. (Call 714-781-DINE up to 60 days in advance).

Candy Cane Inn: Anaheim, California

Property
An Anaheim motel that gets all the details right. The room choices are limited (standard, deluxe, and premium), but they are clean and bright. All rooms have down comforters, refrigerators, coffeemakers, and hairdryers. Premium rooms also have a microwaves, video players, welcome baskets, and in-room breakfast service. The property has a wonderful outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi, free parking, and complimentary breakfast.

Location
Walking distance to Disneyland. Or take the twice-an-hour complimentary shuttle.

Sleeps
2-4 in standard, 2-5 in deluxe, up to 10 in connecting deluxes.

Highlights
Complimentary breakfast–no Disneyland characters wandering around, but no $32 price tag either! TSM and her kids think a bare-chested Aladdin chatting you up over pancakes is sort of creepy anyway. Great pool and jacuzzi scene. Lots of restaurants walking distance from the hotel.

Good to know
Need late check-out? Of course you do. Reserve a Premium room and you can stay as late as 2pm.
