New Family Friendly Hotels in Jutland:

Danhostel Ribe: Ribe, Denmark

danhostel1.jpg danhostel2.jpg danhostel31.jpg
Property

If you haven’t stayed in a hostel for a decade or two, you really should check out the Danhostel Ribe. Family rooms are spacious with private baths and low-rise bunkbeds that even little kids can safely manage. Guests have access to a communal kitchen, which is a very nice benefit in a country with so much smoked fish on the menu.

Location
The location is fantastic: just walk out the front door, cross the bridge, and you’re in the heart of medieval Ribe with its cobblestone streets, timber-framed houses, and nesting storks. You’re also within easy striking distance of Legoland (if that’s your thing), the Ribe Viking Center, the Wadden Sea, and the Lintrup Safari Zoo Park.

Sleeps
2-5.

Highlights
Local children gather every Wednesday during the summer to sell their outgrown toys at a charming children’s flea market at Skibbroen and Kolvigaard. Trust me, it’s hilarious to see your kids negotiate through the language barrier. Plus you can pick up some plane toys for your flight home.

Good to know
This is a hostel, so don’t forget to reserve towels and bed linens when booking.

Property

Ribe Byferie is a riverfront development of 95 attractive and comfortable one and two-bedroom holiday homes located in Denmark’s oldest town. All houses have fully equipped kitchens, televisions, and patios or balconies. There is a playground on the property, and guests have access to the Ribe Swimmingbath (indoor heated pool with waterslides, and don’t you just LOVE the Danish language already?).

Location
Medieval Ribe is the oldest and most charming town in Denmark (originally founded in the year 700). Extremely convenient to the ferry port in Esbjerg (with regular crossings to England) and all the sights in Jutland. Copenhagen is 180 miles to the east, an easy trip on the motorway (those with a second-grade sense of humor should be sure to stop for lunch and road sign photo op in Middelfart on the way).

Sleeps
5-7.

Highlights
For a weird and wonderful Danish experience, follow the night watchman around town on a summer night as he sings the tale of Ribe’s fascinating history troubadour-style.

Good to know
Denmark shares a latitude with such hot spots as Moscow, Scotland, and Alaska–pack accordingly.
