Hotel Excelsior: Dubrovnik, Croatia

excelsior2.jpg excelsior1.jpg excelsior3.jpg
Property
A landmark luxury hotel overlooking the Adriatic in the heart of Croatia’s crown jewel city of Dubrovnik. Built in 1913 (and renovated in 1998) the hotel offers all the usual amenities plus gorgeous terraces with some of the most memorable views in Europe. Families will appreciate the indoor heated pool and easy access to beaches and the city center (easy 5 minute walk). The hotel has no connecting rooms, but the suites work well.

Location
Although the golden walled city of Dubrovnik suffered terrible damage between 1991 and 1995 during the Croatian War of Independence (you can see where the bombs fell on the white marble streets), it has been lovingly restored. The city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and with its numerous outdoor cafés, rampart walls, and plentiful beaches is a fantastic destination for families.

Sleeps
2-4.

Highlights
Take a 50-minute ferry ride to car-free Lopud island (population 220), follow the verdant half-mile footpath to the white sand beach at Sunj, then rent two chairs and an umbrella and watch your children frolic in the warm and shallow bay all day.

Good to know
To maximize comfort at the Excelsior take the mattress off the pull-out couch and put it on the floor. This also cuts down on jumping-on-the-bed related injuries.
