New Family Friendly Hotels in Zambia:

Zambezi Sun: Victoria Falls, Zambia

zambezisun1.jpg zambezisun2.jpg zambezisun32.jpg
Property
The Zambezi Sun is the unpretentious sister property of the posh Royal Livingstone. Don’t let that put you off. Rooms are spacious and air conditioned, location is even closer to the falls, and amenities include a gorgeous pool with poolside cafĂ©.

Location
Near Victoria Falls, a World Heritage site that makes Niagara look like puny. The hotel is located on the politically stable Zambia side (due to recent political upheaval, Zimbabwe currently isn’t a good idea for tourists), and is within walking distance of the falls.

Sleeps
2-4 (5 if one is a baby in a portable crib; bring your own or book ahead, the hotel doesn’t have very many).

Highlights
River cruises. Wildlife spotting (often from the comfort of your room). Live music poolside.

Good to know
Pool is cool–literally. Consider a waterproof disposable camera for close-in shots of the falls, or a Ziploc bag. Food is mostly buffet style, and expensive.

Royal Livingstone Hotel: Victoria Falls, Zambia

royallivingstone1.jpg royallivingstone2.jpg royallivingstone3.jpg
Property

Swanky and expensive, the colonial-themed Royal Livingstone caters well to families. Rooms and suites have all the modern conveniences, plus ultra-luxurious bathrooms and verandas overlooking the Zambezi River. The property has a pool, a trail to the falls, rolling lawns, and a childcare center for kids 2-12.

Location
Overlooking majestic Victoria Falls, a World Heritage site that makes Niagara look absolutely puny. The hotel is located on the politically stable Zambia side (due to recent political upheaval, Zimbabwe currently isn’t a good idea for tourists).

Sleeps
2-4.

Highlights
Sipping a gin and tonic on the sun deck while monkeys vie for your attention (and snacks). Helicopter rides over the falls. Elephant rides. Making endless, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume” jokes. Watching zebras and giraffes wandering the hotel lawns.

Good to know
If you want to make the 10-minute walk to the falls and NOT get soaked, the hotel provides yellow rain slickers. Zambian visas will set you back about $135 per person.
