New Family Friendly Hotels in Mauritius:

Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort Mauritius: Bel Ombre, Mauritius

Property
Ever notice how hard it is to find a vacation spot that is fun for kids and relaxing for parents? Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort Mauritius has somehow managed to strike just that balance. The lovely, plantation-style resort not only has all the sun, sand, and sea you could desire (along with a gorgeous pool that your child will inevitably prefer despite those perfectly manicured beaches) – it has also thought of all those details necessary to make your family vacation something everyone will enjoy. A half-board or all-inclusive resort, they take both their food and their service very seriously.

Location
Le Telfair Golf & Spa Mauritius is a resort built on the grounds of an old British sugar plantation in the district of Bel Ombre. Nestled between the ocean and a river on the underdeveloped southeastern part of the island, the resort is fairly isolated. The Bel Ombre nature reserve is only a few kilometers away. But trips to the island’s capital, Port Louis, and other attractions on the northern part of the island are about one hour’s drive by car.

Sleeps
Up to 4 in a room. Cribs and rollaways are available upon request.

Highlights
Le Telfair makes it easy to do a lot while doing nothing. Water activities (except SCUBA diving) are included and your child will love his first try at water skiing or lazily paddling up the river on a kayak. There are daily glass-bottom and sunset boat trips. French fries are generally available at every meal, making sure that your child won’t throw too big of a fit when you tell him it’s time to leave the pool and get ready for dinner. And there is also a kids’ club, popular in most European resorts, where your child can go hang out while you golf, try out the spa or just try to find that elusive Mommy and Daddy time.

Good to know
The on-site shops are very expensive. Understand that there is no getting out of there without a bunch of overpriced beach junk. It just can’t be done. But the trip inside is worth it for the resort’s movie rental service. All movies are free and they are totally OK with you borrowing CARS for the whole week so your kid can feed his Lightning McQueen obsession in between trips to the pool.

Sidetracked! The Blue Safari Submarine

A Blue Safari Submarine excursion on the island of Mauritius. B.C. (before child), I'd seen similar excursions advertised in Thailand, Greece, and all over the Caribbean. I even hear tell that you can catch a submarine from cruise ships these days. I'm guessing if the locale includes ocean + fish, you can find something similar. ...more »
