Best iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Apps for Kids
The iPhone and the iPad may be the greatest travel toys for kids ever, but who has time to browse the entire iTunes store on a regular basis? Um, we do. We regularly update both this post and its companion, Top Ten iPhone Apps for Kids.

Ages 3 and up, $0.99
A simple but fun creature creation game for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Thirty wacky creatures are divided into five slideable sections (hats, heads, torsos and so on) on 20 backgrounds. Kids can happily mix and match them—with accompanying funny sound effects—to their hearts’ content for hours.
2. Itsy Bitsy Spider
Ages 2 and up, $0.99
Itsy Bitsy Spider for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad starts with a song and adds new characters and interactivity to create a fun reading experience. Lots of hidden items on every page will keep toddlers and preschoolers coming back for more.
3. Sums Stacker
Ages 5 and up (way up), $0.99
Sums Stacker is a sneaky educational app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad masquerading as a fun game for kids. At the bottom of the screen are three target numbers. “Stacked” on top of them are things that can be added (dice, coins, numbers, Roman numerals and so on). Your kids have to make each stack add up to the number it sits on by dragging the items back and forth.
4. Old MacDonald
Ages 2-5, $1.99
A fun, interactive musical book for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad with different languages (English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian), several instruments (violin, cello, piano, kazoo), and a “record-your-own-voice” feature. Includes 12 colorful pages of fully interactive, original illustrations. Great for pre-readers!
5. Grover’s Number Special
Ages 2-5, $2.99
Grover’s Number Special is an endearing educational counting and cooking game for the iPhone and iPod touch with a sneaky side of good nutrition.Kids watch a funny original video in which the waiter (Grover) serves a hungry customer who’s in a hurry. Then they help Grover prepare various healthy meals like soups, salads, and kabobs (by catching foods which inexplicably falls from the sky), which he invariably either drops or eats himself. It’s pure Sesame Street poetry.
Ages 3 and up, $1.99
Take noses, eyes, mouths, hair, facial hair, and hats to create your own hilarious and original faces on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
When kids tire of playing with it, challenge them to make cartoon models of people they know. You, your husband, Grandma, and so on.
7. Highlights Hidden Pictures
Ages 5 and up, $0.99
Highlights Hidden Pictures offers kids fun and challenging hidden objects puzzles that will provide hours of quiet, thoughtful fun on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. This is a great entry level hidden pictures app for kids who aren’t quite ready for Yard Sale and Everest: Hidden Expedition.
The classic black and white illustrations are easy on the eyes and will take you back to your childhood (specifically to your dentist’s waiting room). When kids find objects, they colorize on the picture and the clue menu. Cool!
8. Spikey’s Bounce Around
Ages 6 and up, $0.99
Spikey’s Bounce Around is a fun, break out-style game for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad in which kids launch a cute, spiky ball around a variety of bouncy environments trying to free the magic butterflies who are trapped in glass jars. It can be hard to get the hang of it at first, but kids can retry failed levels until they succeed.
Ages 5 and up, $2.99
Bookworm is an intuitive, educational word search game for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for new readers, rabid wordsmiths, and everyone in between. Kids link letters left, right, up, and down on the screen to build words and earn points with this fun app. Make too many short words and they’ll get burning tiles, which can literally blow up in their face.
10. Yard Sale Hidden Treasures: Sunnyville
Ages 7 and up, $0.99
Yard Sale Hidden Treasures: Sunnyville is a truly great hidden pictures game for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad with an unlikely premise: you move to a new town and have to decorate your house room by room so you can beat your snooty neighbor and impress the judges in the Superstar Homes magazine competition. The problem is, you’re on a fixed budget so you have to shop at yard sales. Luckily your you one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
