Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 Review and Giveaway
For the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to test the waterproof, shockproof Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 
I hadn’t realized how many wet environments I encounter on a typical trip. I reached for this camera over and over and over again. I used it primarily outdoors, and found it useful in oceans, pools, boats, hot tubs, tide pools, and rainy rain forests. Oh yeah, and directly under Niagara Falls.
The photos are crisp and beautiful, and if there’s anything funnier than underwater video then I seriously don’t know what it is. I’m an amateur photographer at best, but here’s what I liked about the Stylus Tough:
It can get really wet
The seals and gaskets keep water out to depths of 33 feet. I suppose you could keep an eye on your depth gauge and carefully use it scuba diving, but it’s best for snorkeling, swimming, and just plain goofing around in the water (and we did plenty of that).
As if the great photos weren’t enough, it shoots great video too (I’ve included a really funny clip of my 7-year-old son playing underwater air guitar at the end of this post to give you an idea of the quality).
It’s tough
The Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 is almost indestructible. You can allegedly drop it from 6.6 feet with no ill effects. Since mine was a loaner, I wasn’t too keen to test this claim. Then, whoops! I did. It slipped right out of my sunscreen-slippery hand, smashed down on the sidewalk, and skidded five feet. I almost had a heart attack of course, but it was absolutely fine (whew). The camera is also freeze-proof (down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit), though I didn’t have an opportunity to test that.
It’s also easy to use 
Like most cameras, this one has a bewildering array of settings. I’m really not all that tech savvy, so I ignored most of then. The ones I found useful were underwater snapshot (exactly what it sounds like), night scene (ditto), and sport (for quick-moving kids).
The menu options are intuitive enough that I had it all figured out after a couple hours of use. The camera has a tap control feature (for use when you are wearing bulky snow or scuba gloves I guess) that I kept accidentally activating. Other than that, I had no trouble.
It’s pocket-sized
At just 3.7″W x 2.4″H x 0.85″D, this is not a large device. My everyday camera is an SLR, so I absolutely loved being able to drop this one into my purse, pocket, or backpack without the bulk.
It’s surprisingly heavy for such a small thing (7.4 ounces) , and that’s probably because it’s built to withstand up to 220 lbs of pressure. The display is a generous 2.7″, which makes it very easy to see what to keep and what to delete on the spot.
Some fine print 
A word of warning: all that getting in and out of the water sometimes leaves droplets of water on the lens. Be sure to wipe them off, or you’ll have big water blobs on your above-the-surface shots. The battery is internally rechargeable with an included A/C adapter. This made me v-e-r-y nervous. What if the battery ran out in the middle of our dolphin swim? What if it died while we were deep in the rain forest? It wasn’t a problem. The camera went days and days on a single charge, despite heavy photo and video use.
The camera has 12 mega pixels (which was plenty for me) and a 3.6 zoom (which wasn’t). Compact cameras are never real heavyweights in the zooming department—that’s the compromise. That’s also why I use an SLR for my primary camera. If zoom matters to you when you travel, you’ll have to bring two cameras. Personally, I think it’s worth it.

Travel savy mom huh? A woman after my own heart. I’m bummed as I didn’t get to take my kids on a true vacation this year. I took two of them to the beach in June but it was unseasonably hot and there was seaweed! Should have skipped it. Tried to make up for it by taking them to Universal. We had two free tickets and I got the Doubletree across the street on Hotwire for $55/night before taxes. I called ahead and asked if there were any other charges. They said no but when I got there the parking was something like $20/day. I told them that at checkin and they comped it. I didn’t go to the parks with them (had some other stuff to take care of) so it was a drag. I’m planning now for this summer and I plan on needing a camera, so get the box ready! I don’t really need a water proof camera because if I can’t see the bottom or the other side of whatever body of water I am around I DO NOT get in! However I do have 6 kids with 5 of them in College and I imagine it would make a very good incentive for one of them to take a few more courses if this was thrown in as a graduation gift!

I just signed up! This camera really sounds too good to be true! I have broken previous cameras after getting them wet, but I wouldn’t have that problem with the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000! I live on the coast, so I would be excited to try the camera out in the ocean! We also live by a river and frequently go to a town pool, so it would be great for those spots too! Would love this considering my Olympus Stylus 740 Digital Camera I have only works when I hold the door that stores the battery down. It has been dropped so many times it finally broke. This would be totally awesome. I could really use a new olympus camera. My current one is one of the first ones out. It’s a 1.3 megapixal takes nice pictures but the new ones take fantastic pics. I can’t imagine being able to take pictures in the pool, ocean, lake, and river that would be too cool.

My camera gets very wet every time I use it. I’m still very happy with my old Stylus 720sw waterproof camera. My friend’s new Stylus Tough 8000 waterproof camera is a great upgrade from the older models.
