Get Out There

I’m indoorsy by nature. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the outdoors—I do. It’s just that I generally prefer to appreciate it through a window with a cup of coffee in my hand and a book in my lap.

I hasten to add in my defense that I do interact with the natural world on a semi-regular basis. I live in Northern California after all, and sportiness is pretty much compulsory here. Now that my kids are a little older, I camp occasionally, hike when pressured to do so, and ski once a year.

Did you know there are people who do all these things with toddlers? Did you know there are people who do all these things with newborns? Me neither.

Meet avid adventuress Heidi Ahrens. She and her husband took their infant daughter Coralie tent camping when she was 2 ½ weeks old, and they’ve never looked back.

She created her web site Outdoor Baby as a resource for families who truly live to be outdoors. Members post tips, tricks, photos, and questions in the following categories: water sports, winter sports, running, hiking, biking, camping, and backpacking. Oh, and travel.

It’s a very appealing site with a warm and personal style—I encourage you to check it out. I lost the better part of an afternoon browsing through the many interesting posts.

And I did it all from the comfort of my own living room.
