@Marina: We're from DC--where most museums are free--so we're very spoiled. I was surprised that MMA was still charging based on the "suggested price" system. I think it might have been something like $40 per adult and $20 per child. My wife paid $40 for her and I, and nothing for our two kids. But she could have just as easily paid $1 for all of us.

@Jane: That does sound like a fun excursion. We took a similar trip once to Staten Island. Our kids loved it. We rode the subway all the way to the tip of Manhattan. Like you, we passed the Statue of Liberty. Near the Ferry station at Staten Island is a ball park where a minor league team plays (part of the Yankee's farm system). There's also a great pizza place. The Pizza place owner seemed pretty surprised when we told him we were from the DC-area.

One cool thing I did once is take the ferry from Manhattan over to Jersey and back again. It went right past the Statue of Liberty. We didn't get off on Ellis Island, of course, but it wasn't too long (for young kids) and we had great views. And it was fun being on a boat!
