Edinburgh, Scotland: 5 Family Favorites

Ahhh, Scotland!  This famed isle of golf and whiskey has a lot more to offer visiting families than you might think.  So come prepared to explore, try a little Haggis and be charmed by this incredible city.  But a word to the wise — if a kilted local offers to show you his “bonny star,” run in the other direction.

1. Edinburgh Castle

Perched at the highest point in Edinburgh, the castle boasts some stunning views and museums that won’t bore the pants off of your offspring.  Wander among the buildings and check out the Scottish crown jewels, David’s Gate and giant cannon, Mons Meg.  But honestly, the grounds themselves are as much of a delight to kids.  Chet was happy enough just running along the old cobbled streets and steep stair cases.  And testing his balance on some leftover ammo.

2. The 3-D Loch Ness Experience

Okay, this was a little cheesy.  But it was in 3-D!  Want to learn more about the myth and science behind Nessie, Scotland’s famed undersea monster?  Check out this 25 minute film about just how scientists are trying to verify sightings of her in the country’s largest lake.  It’s a great introduction to the Loch Ness and whether it’s even possible for a large sea serpent to reside there.  I worried that Chet wouldn’t be too keen once the film moved away from the monsters and into the science but the 3-D (and the attached headphones) kept him engaged.

3. The Waters on Leith

Make your way to the footpaths along the River Leith and you may not realize you are still within city limits.  These lovely paths are great for a relaxing walk towards the funky Stockbridge neighborhood or just to let your kids get their ya-yas out.

But do beware – there are ways to get down to the water and there is a possibility that your child will somehow, someway manage to get his pants wet.  Your husband, too.

4. The Edinburgh Zoo

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!  Edinburgh’s local zoo is an over-80 acre park filled with nearly 1,000 species of animals.  And you don’t have to feel too guilty about enjoying it as this biological conservation and research centre does its best to provide open, natural habitats for all of its animals.

5. The Scotch Whiskey Experience
I’m sure you’re wondering if I’m off my rocker with this one.  But seriously, Edinburgh’s Scotch Whiskey Experience, located right next to Edinburgh Castle, isn’t kidding when it says it can provide a whiskey experience that is fun for the whole family.  Enjoy the educational – and sometimes spooky – barrel ride that demonstrates the finer points of making the local quaff.  But your child may be even more intrigued in the whiskey tasting portion of the tour.

Though he won’t get his own glass, he will be able to smell the local plants and influences that make up each of the four region’s distinct single malt whiskies.  And for whatever reason, kids seem to think that is super-cool.

Great post, Kayt – not that I took my kids to Edinburgh myself (they have a habit of getting in the way of whiskey experimentation). If I did, though, they’d have loved the castle at the top of the Royal Mile, along with that wholoe high street stretch of shopping and sights. The old Toll Boot Prison, the Witchery (we stayed there overnight – ooh, historic AND spooky), Hollyrood palace at the bottom, and various closes all made me wish I did take my kids on that trip, though. maybe next time!

That first picture reminds me of Horton Hatches an Egg.

Thrilled to find out I’m not the only one who took my toddler to a whiskey distillery (in our case it was the Bushmills distillery in N.Ireland).

Oh dear! I have to add this because I CARE about TravelSavvyMom credibility.
In Scotland it’s Whisky (see, no ‘e’).
In Ireland, it’s Whiskey.
Guaranteed to fool your spellchecker.
Very annoying to me since it’s Uisce Beatha (that’s water of life) in both Scots and Irish gaelic.

You should have said hello when you were here!

Great suggestions – I’m not sure they all would be my first kid-friendly choices but good stops nonetheless.

Some other good suggestions over at The Edinburgh Guide:

See you around here in Auld Reekie!
