Top 5 iPhone Travel Tools

As you know, I am a big proponent of iPhone applications for kids (see Top Ten iPhone Apps for Kids and Wait, There’s More! Another 10 iPhone Apps for Kids). But I have also discovered some awesome iPhone travel tools for the adult in the family. You know, for the person who actually owns the iPhone. Here they are, in no particular order:
1. World Countries ($0.99) Impress your family and friends with your world knowledge. Based on the CIA Fact books and Wikipedia, this iPhone app incorporates information on 238 countries, including major cities, culture, history, population and geography. There’s a quiz included which makes it fun for kids too. Developer: ADS Software
2. iConvert ($0.99) Not only does this app convert currency, it also converts all those pesky measurements such as length, volume and weight, among many others. So if you want to order a pint in London, you can see how much more beer you get in an English pint and how much it will cost you in dollars back in the States. Developer: Future Apps
3. Baby Monitor ($4.99) Staying in a large house, or visiting friends but the baby monitor is just one more thing to pack? Worry not! Download this app, place the iPhone near your sleeping baby, and if it detects noise, it places a phone call to the number of your choice (hopefully your spouse’s mobile). Developer: CodeGoo
4. Babelingo Travel Phrases ($5.99) The good news is there are a heap of great translation apps out there. The bad news is that unless your pronunciation is spot on, you may end up buying a purse rather than taking your child to a doctor. This ingenious app holds over 300 useful phrases in 11 languages (including Hindi, Japanese and Chinese). The phrases appear on your iPhone in large print in the local language so you can show them to the confused local standing in front of you. Developer: Alta Vida LLC
5. Livespeakr ($100.00) It’s annoying, isn’t it? You download kids’ audiobooks and music for your trip, you reach your destination and where do you play them? No iPhone outlet at the hotel or in your rental car? No worries. Invest in these pocket-sized speakers, small enough to carry in your purse but powerful enough to sound like a boom box. Developer: Digital Group Audio

I like the idea behind the World Countries information pulled from the CIA factbook… hopefully this app is prettier than the website it’s pulling from :-)
