@Angela The horseback riding was $70 for adults and $60 for kids. Admission to the Volcanoes National Park was about $20, I think.

The Big Island is very big. Too big for day trips to the other side. We stayed in 3 different places when we went (details here: http://www.travelsavvymom.com/blog/family-travel/the-big-island-three-ways/)

Other things we loved included

1. Just chilling at the beach in front of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the Kohala Coast (which we booked through Hotwire and got for very cheap).

2. Snorkeling in a cove near that same hotel.

3. Hiking to black sand Polulu Beach on the north Kohala Coast (when were staying at Puakea Ranch)

Good luck with your trip!

Hi,

We are planning a trip to the big island for a family of 4 (4 year old and 5 year old) plus two grandparents.

Do you mind sharing cost details for the national parks and your ranch adventure? I'm dying to hear the 6,7,8,9 favorite things you did there too.

While I'm at it, would you mind sharing if you found the Big island to big to drive around and "see it all"? Where you able to see the black sand beaches, and hike up any volanoes (not the active one, lol), tour the rainforest, swim in a hot spring, anything else I should be planning?

I'd really appreciate any cost input you can give (not for hotels or flights) but for activities, your experience with car rentals, and food options. I know it's a loaded question but any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are taking my inlaws along and want to have a great time, but are also trying not to break the bank, know what I mean? Thank you in advance, Angela

Pu’uhonua o Honaunau or Place of Refuge is one of the most wonderful places in the world (plus the tikis are cool). We would have spent hours there if not for a fall on lava rock that left a very skinned knee and tired child.
