Berlin is a pretty good distance - my guess is that you are looking at an all day train ride. The two nearest big cities are Nuremberg and Munich.

How long is the train from Berlin? We're mulling over a Berlin trip next summer, and my kids can only handle so much architecture before they want to hit the great outdoors.
