Stopping to Smell the Flowers

July 31st, 2009 | by Kayt Sukel 14 comments

I parent, therefore I schedule.  I try to be one of these non-Type-A moms that doesn’t freak out if her kid is up 10 minutes past bedtime.  But I usually fail.  I can’t help myself.  Both my kid and I do better on a schedule.  And I’ll admit, while traveling, I’m often so busy trying to organize how to get from Point A to Point B in time for Chet to eat lunch by 11:30am, I might miss a few things along the way.

Luckily, I have a very curious kid that can get me out of that zone when I’m too deep in it.  I never know what will capture his attention when we’re traveling.  But usually, his instincts are right on.

See this photo?  Behind us and a little to the left is the giant stone pre-historic temple of Mnajdra on the island of Malta.  It was (and remains) pretty frickin’ cool.  Awe-inspiring even.  But so was just taking a moment to stop, ignore the arrow signs that showed us the proper site route, and smell the flowers with my kid.

Funny how that works.

We are participating in Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday with this post.  Head on over there and check it out.

I agree with you….one of the perks of having children is that it forces me to slow down, crouch down, and look at things from a brand new perspective.

Would love to hear more about your trip to Malta. Moving to Sicily next week and already starting to think about planning a trip to Malta…especially good family activities/lodging/etc.

What a great picture of you and your little one. You can see the excitement and wonder in both you and your little one’s eyes. I am constantly amazed at the little things I notice because of my children!

Little thing in life sometimes is the most precious. :) Glad you can let go a bit and smell the flowers.

Great that you have someone you draw your attention to the little details you might otherwise miss.

Malta, now that’s a place I haven’t heard people blog about often. I can imagine the place and temple being out of this world, I really enjoyed my stay there all those years ago. Nice shot, very personal.

This is a great reminder that all of us, moms or not, need to stop and smell the flowers. I work better on a schedule, too, but sometimes I just NEED to go off schedule and do something not on my task list!

The Smile on his face is priceless. Simple enjoyments are often the best.

great shot, you forget the little things in life. with kids, for some reason they see what we have forgotten to notice ages ago. we learn so much from them.

Three cheers for Chet! Gorgeous shot of you both – thanks for the reminders of slowing down and enjoying the moments.

Sweet story. Traveling with kids is always a balance between what we think is cool and what they think is cool. That’s why it’s so much fun :).

Kids are great at getting us to stop and smell the roses. Because they won’t let you keep walking until you literally stop and smell the roses.
