Shark!

Anyone who reads my posts knows that I’m a sucker for aquariums. Maybe it’s the fact I’m a SCUBA diver or maybe it’s just that I find watching fish in water so relaxing but I just. can’t. get. enough. I say that I go for Chet but, the truth is, I go just as much for me. I adore aquariums. Always have and I imagine I always will.
Having said that, there is something that I absolutely hate about aquariums, too. The fact that I can never get a good photo. I suppose it’s a bit counterintuitive to try to capture something as elusive and kinetic as fish swimming in water. I was never very good at it when I tried underwater photography as a diver and most of my aquarium shots look like blurry blue-tinged portraits of trash. Add in a running boy, low light and all those people mulling about and you’re guaranteed 50 shots of nothing. But I keep trying just the same.
And good thing, too. Because every once in a great long while, you get that perfect shot. This past weekend, at the Sea Life Aquarium in Helsinki, Finland, I got that one-in-a-million photo capture. Chet and his father staring up in wonder at a shark swimming above them in the shark tunnel. It takes me right back there, to the cool dark of that shark tunnel, feeling the wonder of those animals swimming above me. Loving that I was sharing this passion of mine with my son. And yes, feeling almost as if I, too, were immersed in that water.
After an unacceptably long hiatus, we’re participating in Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday series with this post. Head on over there and check it out.

That’s amazing picture! I have the same problem. It always come out too dark. But if you have a chance to visit Atlanta, I think GA Aquarium will give you what you want. The wave section where you feel like you are underneath the wave always give good lighting that you can get amazing picture there. :)
Heh heh. Amy, at least your smart enough to turn off your flash – hence the too-dark photo. I’m the n00b who keeps the flash on, so I A) get a big flare reflecting off the glass and B) scare the poo out of the marine critters, resulting in dirty looks from all the fish-friendly kids in the room.
Wow, that really is an outstanding shot. Glad to have you back!
Nice shot!
Even if you got 50 shots of nothing, you got one good shot. I like it!
This shot illustrates the value of persistence! You take enough shots, you’ll eventually get at least one fantabulously amazing photo :)
Thanks for sharing your beautiful picture!
What a great shot! I love the view! We also love to go to aquariums but I definitely won’t scuba dive! I love to see my sharks behind glass!
I love the marine blue shades in this picture and the fact that we can see Chet’s belly button. Very nice.
Great picture. Nice to have that glass separating them from the shark!
I love that you’ve fessed up to being the one who likes aquariums so much!
I’m a sucker for these places too and I’m terrified of scuba diving:) Really, I have my PADI license but have no idea how I got it, since I’m scared to go 5 feet below.
Great picture!
Cool shot! I also subscribe to the shoot-a-million shots so I have a chance of getting the shot I want. Or better yet, the shot I never knew was even possible.
That’s an amazing shot Kayt – lucky you!
