Our Writers. Elsewhere.

Did you know that many of the smart, funny women who donate their time and talent here at Travel Savvy Mom every day get paid to write elsewhere? It’s true. And in some pretty impressive places too.

Magazines

Jennifer Margulis is a loyal friend, and one of the hardest working writers I know. Her story, “Things Are Looking Up for Niger’s Wild Giraffes”, appeared on the cover of Smithsonian magazine in November. Ahem.

Freelancer Jody Mace recently wrote about the experience of hang gliding in spite of a less than sleek body for O Magazine. Yes, that O Magazine. Check out Weightless. Who among us hasn’t dreamed of flying?

Sascha Zuger’s wonderful “Uphill Both Ways” appeared in Plenty magazine, and tells the hilarious story of her decision to walk to her son’s preschool instead of driving to save money and our planet. Read this if you’ve ever been tempted to do the same. Read it even if you haven’t.

Christine Louise Hohlbaum, an American expat in Germany and connoisseur of all things alpine, recently wrote Five Minutes (or less) to a Saner Day for Parenting magazine.

Newspapers

Prolific freelancer Debbie Abrams Kaplan had her story, “100 Years of Cornflakes” (about her family’s quirky visit to the now-defunct Kellogg’s Cereal City in Michigan) run in both the Chicago Tribune and the Dallas Morning News.

Books

Shelly Rivoli (a mom of two young children, now pregnant with her third) somehow finds time to also author books, make regular radio and television appearances, and even travel. Her book Travels with Baby is a great resource for new parents.

The thoughtful Katherine Barrett has an essay forthcoming in Call Me Okaasan: Adventures in Multicultural Mothering. Her story, “Carrying On”, describes her reaction—as a mother and a newly arrived ex-pat—to the xenophobic violence that erupted in South Africa last May.

Websites

In “They Called, I Answered. It Got to Me.” (for the Washington Post) my accomplished partner Kayt Sukel tells about the trials and tribulations of running a Family Readiness Group (FRG), the Army’s answer to a family support group, while her husband’s unit is deployed to Iraq.

Finally, I have been writing for fodors.com. Incidentally, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of seeing my name in close proximity to the word “Fodors”. Please check out “5 Tips for Luring Your Kids Outside on the Family Vacation” and my “Age-by-Age Guide to Planning a Family Trip”.

Be sure to tell them I sent you.
