My Son, the Photographer

Many of us here at Travel Savvy Mom have said that the iPhone is a lifesaver when it comes to traveling with kids.  And though my son adores the movies and applications, he’s decided that his favorite way to use the device is to take photos.  Lots and lots of photos.  Here are a few of this blossoming photographer’s best shots from our past few trips – as well as his explanations (when necessary) of his artistic vision.

1.  Hot air ballooning outside Marrakech:

Forget the views from the basket.  Chet was more interested in capturing that his shoes and the basket were both brown.  Coincidence?  I think not.  How could he not try to capture that kind of magic?!

2.  “I take picture of Mommy!”

Sometimes this results in a kind of sweet portrait.  In fact, with the first one, Chet said, “Mommy pretty!” and snapped.  But more often, Chet taking photos of me results in my cleavage or can being recorded for posterity.  Not something I’m particularly keen on after having sacrificed my waistline carrying him – even with a pretty Moroccan guest palace in the background.

3.  Just a few of my favorite things.

This might be in Bodrum, might be in Marrakech.  Honestly, I can’t be sure – because, true to form, Chet’s favorite photographic subjects are his toy CARS.  Lightning McQueen just can’t get enough face time – and he’s one well-traveled car.

4. But once in a while (if you are willing to go through hundreds of “trash” photos), he really does capture a moment.

Both of these were taken in Morocco.  The first shows Chet’s other favorite subject, Grover, lounging at the Riad.  It is a perfect shot of how relaxing a nice Riad stay can be.  And the second?  A portrait of our Berber host in a small village outside the city.  Though he shied away from my pictures, this warm and friendly man smiled openly for my son. It’s a perfect moment captured – reminiscent of a lovely hour spent in a stranger’s home.

So despite the fact that my buttocks will probably remain forever picture fodder, I plan to keep giving Chet the iPhone to indulge his photographic urges.  Because you really never do know what he might capture…

I don’t have an iPhone, but I’m surprised at how good some of these came out. The quality may be a pro or a con, depending on how good a shot he gets of your buttocks.

If my kids took pictures of my butt with my iPhone, I’d take away their phone playing privileges for at least a week.

Love this fantastic post. And how fabulous is it that you collect and appreciate his views of the wide world as you’re traveling with him.

My 2 year old uses the iPhone to snap pictures of nothing (he likes to watch the shutter close) and play “Ben Stein It’s Trivial” … endlessly. If he knew he could snap photos of women’s endowments, I think it could be the start of a lifelong hobby.
