Eating on the road (or Preschoolerly Disdain)

My son has a fairly specific travel diet. It consists of french fries, french fries and even more french fries. He has always somehow innately understood that, while on the road, at least, he will be permitted to get by on a pure starch diet so the rest of the family can have a decent meal. For the most part, this isn’t a problem. Even your most remote spot usually has a deep fryer and some potatoes. But every once in a while, we eat in a restaurant that does. not. serve. french. fries. And usually, this culminated in a lot of whining no matter what other potato variety might be available.

But somehow, someway, this weekend, I managed to convince Chet that German bratkartoffln – basically the German version of Home Fries – were “special” french fries that he had to try. He was skeptical, I’ll admit. But when the plate arrived, he gave it the old college try. And then, he scarfed down his plate in about 5 minutes flat. But not, of course, before discarding the garnish with the kind of disdain only a pre-schooler can manage.
So now I can brag that my kid will eat french fries and, er, fried potatoes while we’re traveling. Progress!
We’re participating in Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday series with this post. Head on over there and check it out.

Hilarious! He really has that look mastered.
Love his facial expression! It shows that he does really put a lot of effort into trying. Bravo to him!!
Oh, that dreaded, poisonous green stuff. We have a 5-year-old-green-hater in our family too. One day. One day.
A true fried potato fan. His face says it all.
I must have the only child in the world who doesn’t like potatoes. Mine would not have touched those (especially with the green stuff) with a ten foot pole. Only those officially vetted through the golden arches will do, so good job on getting him to try this new dish!
I have a couple of fry fiends too. At least it’s a vegetable – and can any “french” food really be that bad?
Those potatoes look delicious. I’d get rid of the green stuff too. :-)
Reminds me of my trip to Italy where all I ate was gelato for about 3 weeks straight… ahhh….
Wow, I’m impressed he’s coming near that. My son would run screaming and call me the anticrist:)
I love this for my little guys it’s chicken nuggets…hard to talk them into anything else when they’re on the road!
If I had a nickel for every French fry my children had eaten while on the road…well, let’s just say I wouldn’t need any gainful employment.
To me the most embarrassing place my child ate a French fry (and a McDonald’s one at that) was in Florence.
On a positive note, my oldest child’s favorite food is now sushi. Seeing Chet eat that plate of food gives me hope for him too.
What’s funny is that Chet was happily eating some Moroccan fruits and salads and then the waiter OFFERED him french fries. Of course, no other food would do and he wouldn’t touch a delicious chicken stew.
Maybe there’s hope – as long as french fries aren’t an option. =)
D’you what’s absolutely hilarious? I have two (Irish) children who will eat pasta or noodles anywhere, but will not eat potatoes. Not even french fries.
We’re just coming out of the bland-carbs-only diet with my older son. At 13. It’s been a long plain-chicken-and-pasta-only filled road.
