Hi Kate,
Keep in mind it's 7 1/2 hrs drive assuming no traffic or other issues from Puerto Viejo beach to Manuel Antonio beach. Not a drive I'd want to make. I'd choose one coast or the other, Sorry, I don't know much about the resorts. I like the smaller lodges. Good luck!

Hi Jenny,
We're planning 10 days trip to Costa Rica in the end of February. We will travel with our boys: 4 and 1,5 years old. We want to visit Caribbean and Pacific coast. We want to drive from San Jose to Puerto Viejo, stay night. Next day drive to Cahuita or Puerto Viejo, stay 4 nights. Then drive to Manuel Antonio and stay rest days. Do you think is it possible?
Could you please advice kids friendly and luxury resort or hotel or lodge in those areas?
Thank you in advance for your response.

Hi Karen,
Check out the Costa Rica hotel reviews on this website for ideas (top left hand side of screen). For an itinerary- if you fly into San Jose, the Arenal Volcano, Sarapiqui rainforest and Playa Negra beach makes a nice loop without too much time in the car. Have fun!

Hi Alex,
Sounds like fun! If you're going on your own for a length of time, you might want a car rather than relying on taxis. Though if you rent a car you have to think about a safe place to park it as rental cars are a nice target for break-ins. I like Playa Negra- walkable with the occasional taxi, reasonable walk into the town of Cahuita for amenities, groceries. Manzanillo area is great but a bit more remote- you might want a car there. 4 hrs from Cahuita/Playa Negro to SJO. More as you go farther along the coast towards Panama. Have fun!

Hi Alejandro,
I"d fly into SJO to visit MA(assuming Manuel Antonio) and Arenal Volcano area, you'll have less drive time that way. Good budget places near Arenal with a pool for families are La Catarata EcoLodge and Hotel Monte Real. Not much affordable near MA- I usually go to the Caribbean coast. Have fun!

Hi Jenny,
I'm going to Costa Rica with my 5 year old son hopefully sometime in March or April. I am so lost right now on where to go and lodge. My son loves animals and the rainforest. I would love to visit an area where we can see animals, maybe go horse back riding and would like to be close to beaches. I also heard the volcano area is very nice for kids to see. As you can see I'm kind of confused on where to go. Do you have any suggestions on where I can go with my 5 year old boy?

Hello Jenny-

I'd like to compliment you on all of your great responses and experiences.
My family and I [wife, kids - 11,9,6] are thinking about going to CR in early March for 8-9 days.
We've been to Mexico over the last few years - but are now looking for something new.
I'd like to stay somewhere on the quiet side and have a kid-friendly / calm beach, snorkeling, etc. Use a place like that as a base - and maybe take a couple tours during that time. Seems like the Caribbean side is the way to go as our 1st time to CR - and the town that seems closest to what we want is Manzanillo.
Have you ever been there? Would you recommend it - or something similar? I've been on your site as well - looks like alot of fun - but I think we want to do something at a slower pace our 1st time there.

Also, would you recommend car rental or taxis/other transport? The beach towns look like they're 4 or so hours from SJO..

Thank you in advance for your response..

Hi Jenny,

my husband and I are planning a trip to CR in April for 7 nights the week before Easter along with our 6 yr old daughter. We would like to split our trip into two destinations La Fortuna and MA...we plan to rent a car. Which is the best airport to land in SJO or Liberia? should we go to La Fortuna first or MA? one more thing wich are the best value hotels to stay at for both places...we don't need a luxury resort or hotel but would like something nice with a pool. Please advise. Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi Amy,
I haven't heard of any zip lines that take 3 yr olds. A couple take 5 yr olds (tandem): Monteverde (Selvatura I think) and one near Cahuita beach, Caribbean coast. Have fun!
