Broadway, Baby!

Okay, so the bright lights may call – but who has the pocketbook for a New York City stay and show with kid in tow?
A hotel in the city that doesn’t sleep can easily set you back $300 for a bare bones uninspired crash spot. But from Jan 2 – Feb 14, the Apple Core Hotel’s very cute boutique Hotel at Times Square sets you up with a stylish room in the heart of the Times Square action, including a pretty comprehensive continental breakfast (and being in NYC means the bagels actually taste like bagels) and a trip to the famed Times Square Toys “R” Us for your kiddo to pick and stuff a Filled-With-Love friend. Packages start at just $159.
Not only is the Toys “R” Us massive (did I mention it sports a four-story Ferris wheel featuring favored kids’ characters?) but you can catch amazing acts for free as they debut new products and videos.
I know I’m a dork, but I became an unrecognizable crazed Gordon groupie as he introduced the new Elmo Live toy with Elmo, himself. The real Gordon from Sesame Street! What the heck is in the water on Sesame Street anyway? He looks exactly the same as he did in 1973 (minus the plaid polyester pants).
Let’s open the curtains to the real knock out punch here; Kids Night On Broadway kicks off Feb 3rd and 4th by offering free tickets for kids 6-18 joining an adult. They’ve expanded the program to be year round, the first Tues and Wed of each month. Lion King, Mary Poppins, Wicked and a dozen or so other top shows are participating!
Ticket includes pre-theatre parties, restaurant discounts, parking discounts, a special edition Kids’ Playbill provided by Theatre Development Fund, educational programs in cooperation with Thru the Stage Door and Take it From the Top, Broadway fun and events, plus more. The Feb 3rd free kick off party is at famed Madame Tussauds New York!
Restaurant deals include free entrée for ticketed kids. While there is a long list of good eateries on restaurant row, Mars 2112, right up Broadway from the Hotel at Times Square is a must have experience for space lovers. Arrive on the Red Planet via 5 minute simulated rocket ride and enjoy your apps under the watchful eyes of wandering aliens. Meteor showers and spacescapes captivate-truly an otherworldly experience.
So go! Stay cheap, eat cheap, stuff toys cheap, park cheap, see amazing shows cheap…and of course, give my regards to Broadway!

Wow, love it! We were just in NYC and saw a Broadway show at a great price, but this deal looks fab! Kids, Broadway, & NYC are a great mix.
Don’t miss the nearby American Girl Place as well, FAO Swartz and skating at Rockefeller Center or the great museums like the Natural History or Metropolitan. Our kidlet loved it all!!
Fun stuff and good deals, too! You saw The Real Gordon? Now that would have made my day.
This really is the best deal going– the hotel had even cheaper rates (around $139) sans the package (for those with teens along for the ride who don’t live to blow kisses into the empty fabric tummy of a wilted frog or panda bear).
Ah, Gordon, sigh– sooo cool! I mortified my son by belting out “Sing, Sign a Song” in my biggest best outdoor voice. I swear I was waaaaay more into it than that crowd of kidlets– my cheeks hurt from grinning.
O.K. So I am inspired to head to NY. I don’t know what makes me more giddy delight, the space restaurant or the prospect of seeing Gordon. I KNOW I would enjoy it more than my son.
