Blink and You’ll Miss It

While in Brugge, we took advantage of a canal tour.  As we meandered around the city’s waterways, I had one hand on Chet to keep him from jumping out of the boat, and the other on my camera, snapping photos along the way.

While trying to zoom one-handed to capture a particularly pretty wall and garden, Chet started to stand up by my side.

“Doggie, Mama!  Doggie!”

I saw no doggie.  I saw some swans, sure.  Lots of tourists.  There was even some graffiti of what could have been a horse a few minutes behind us.  But no dogs.  But Chet kept insisting, “Doggie, Mama!  Doggie!”

“No, baby,” I replied while I put down my camera and pushed him back to sitting.  “There’s no doggie.”

Just then the boat turned around and our tour guide pointed out a window and a very popular citizen of Brugge.  A beautiful Lab, luxuriating in a bay window, holding court for all of us.  Ironically, I had snapped a gorgeous picture of her just as I was telling Chet there was no doggie.

Blink and you’ll miss it.  Travel without kids and you might miss even more.

Kids can find animals anywhere huh? (And labs will find kids)

Kids view things in a completely different way from adults. Amazing what they spot.

I don’t blame the kids for their attraction to dogs. I miss having a dog these days and love encountering dogs in my travels :)

A perfect distillation of the pleasure of traveling with small children (makes the potty training worthwhile, huh?)
