Best audio books for family road trips

20 great audible.com audio books to download for family road tripsIf you’re heading out on a family road trip, or really any drive longer than 30 minutes, an Audible Gold Digital Membership is a lifesaver.  We’ve previously written about the best audio books for kids, and that list is still a great resource for browsing and buying.  Here’s an updated list of 20 great stories — all available through Amazon’s audible.com — which work really well for families listening together.

(One note: even if you’ve seen the movie version of some of these, I urge you to try the audio book versions.  They are completely different: rich, mesmerizing, and addictive…in a good way.)

For families with kids 9 and under:

1.  The Giants and the Joneses

2.  Matilda

3.  Storybound

4.  How to Train Your Dragon

5.  The Fast and the Furriest

6.  The Wide-Awake Princess

7.  The Last Dragonslayer

8.  Fablehaven

9.  The Fourteenth Goldfish

10.  The Secret History of Tom Trueheart

For families with kids 10 and older:

1.  I am Number Four

2.  Inkheart

3.  The Castle in the Attic

4.  The Spiderwick Chronicles

5.  The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 1)

6.  The Indian in the Cupboard

7.  Sky Raiders (Five Kingdoms, Book 1)

8.  Wild Born (Spirit Animals, Book 1)

9.  Ella Enchanted

10.  The Red Pyramid

(One other note: these are all funny, smart stories.  Some can be a little scary for very young listeners, or a little confusing.  Read the descriptions carefully and make your best educated guess.  I think it’s better to have kids listen down than listen up.  A good story is a good story, regardless of the age it’s intended for.)

I think “Rocket Boys” would be a great book to listen to for age 9 or 10 and older. I listed to it back in the day on Books on Tape. It is available from Audible.com
