We hike twice a month with our kids. The older one (4) is up to two miles-the toddler goes in the REI pack. It is such an amazing family time. I have another post here about my picks for outdoor fun:

We just recently started to try hiking with kids. We started at baby step by hiking in our backyard and it was a blast. We plan for a future hike now. :) You are right. Kids love it!

We just posted about our experience in our first time backyard hiking. :)

I love following your hikes vicariously. Our family tries to hike. Sometimes we're successful, sometimes it's a bust, but it does make for great memories.

My son loves to be outside, but he doesn't have the "hiking gene". It's never his first choice, but since I love hiking, I take him anyway. Once he gets going, he's fine (mostly). I got him a hiking stick and for some reason that seems to help. Or if I go hiking where there's boulders he can climb, it seems that he's more of a rock climber.
Great list.

Great idea for a post, Sharlene. Thanks! We often get out for hiking weekends with our two young children. We started them out in the baby backpacks, but our backs could only take that for so long. Both kids started hiking early on their own and they love it - it's a wonderful escape for us from life in a chaotic city and special time together as a family.
