10 Family Friendly Bed and Breakfasts

Bed and Breakfasts often market themselves as romantic getaways. Picture quiet, rose-covered cottages, stuffed to the rafters with antiques. Not exactly child-friendly. That said, some of my best childhood memories are of a vacation at a farmhouse B&B.  I saw a calf being born, a flock of geese chase my mother and we drank fresh milk every day.

Many B&Bs are exceptionally family-friendly, reasonably priced and allow you to explore areas where no hotel dares go.  Check these out:

1. The Town’s Inn
Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia
Set in a breathtaking historic town, 70 miles from Washington DC, this B&B (pictured at right) consists of two pre-Civil War stone houses less than 200 yards from the Appalachian Trail and the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers.

2. Capay Valley Bed & Breakfast
Capay, California
Set in pretty hills a short drive from Sacramento, this 142-acre working ranch boasts farm and zoo animals.

3. The Lafayette Inn
Easton, Pennsylvania
A beautifully restored 1895 Georgian house welcomes families. If the Crayola Factory, just 1-mile away, doesn’t interest your children, take a mule-drawn canal boat, a steam train or visit the hands-on Da Vinci Discovery Museum.

4. Sunrise Farm
Salem, South Carolina
Children under 12 stay free on this 10-acre farm in The Blue Ridge Mountain foothills (pictured at left). Your kids will enjoy the farm pets while you enjoy the rocking chairs.

5.  The Eagle Inn
Santa Barbara, California
Large rooms, accommodating owners, less than 3-minute’s walk to the beach and near to downtown. What more could you want?

6.  The Hideaway Ranch and Retreat
Bluff Dale, Texas
Winner of the BedandBreakfast.com Best Family Friendly Inn award, the 155-acre ranch offers secluded cabins nestled in woods, as well as numerous outdoor activities such as sunset rides and chuckwagon dinners.

7.  The Lake House Inn
Lake Erie, Ohio
Explore this beautiful area of the United States, only 50 miles from Cleveland. Sunsets, al fresco dining, biking and walking and on-site wine tasting are all available at this charming B&B (pictured at right).

8.  The Century House
Nantucket Island, Massachusetts
White picket fences, porches, beaches, cookies and cream – shall I go on? The perfect holiday on Nantucket Island.

9.  Turtle Beach Resort
Siesta Key, Florida
Cottages in a natural tropical setting, with gorgeous white sandy beaches and dolphins for watching.

10.  Rosse Posse Acres
Molalla, Oregon
As if vacationing on an elk ranch weren’t enough of a draw for kids, these folks have a pet wallaby too.

Great idea for a post – I like to stay in B&B’s too. We’re going to check one out in Southern Vermont this summer that’s also a working farm.

The Manse Bed & Breakfast Inn in Cape May, NJ is also family friendly. My kids love the breakfasts they serve and the home-baked treats at afternoon tea. The location was great too, very close to the beach and just next to the outdoor shopping plaza. Cape May is a beautiful Victorian town with outstanding restaurants, shopping, tours, and all the typical beach activities. Well worth the visit.
